A single White Rose flag flying outside the Civic Hall on the 1st August; Yorkshire Day. The Civic Hall was originally built as a Mechanics Institute, using funds raised by the Great Saddleworth Exhibition of 1853. Yorkshire Day memorialises the battle of Minden, fought on 1st August 1759, where Yorkshire troops wore white roses in their hats while trouncing the French. It also commemorates the achievements of William Wilberforce, one-time MP for Yorkshire, who played a pivotal part in bringing about the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, on 1st August 1838.
