These houses form one of the oldest settlements in the parish. The house on the right is dated 1699. The hamlet was visited around 1850 by the London Morning Chronicle journalist, Angus Bethune Reach. He described the people of Saddleworth as a ‘hardy, industrious and primitive race.’ Reach met a robust octogenarian whose home had three handlooms and spinning jennies on the top floor and whose whole family was engaged in the domestic production of flannel and doeskin. The tight-fisted patriarch paid them no monetary wages but dispensed cash if they wanted to go to a fair.
