We re-launched the Weavers Factory gallery on January 8th 2022 with ‘Horizontality and Verticality’ - an exhibition celebrating Joan Charnley’s 1949 textile design thesis ‘Horizontality and Verticality - the Importance of Stripe in Textile Design’. To celebrate our relaunch we’ve produced our first ever book (a 210-page art book telling the story of Joan’s thesis), plus brand new limited-edition prints from the thesis and Joan’s 1952 textile “Stars and Stripes” textile design. And on the top floor we invited design students from Oldham college to create new work inspired by Joan’s thesis.

This 210-page limited-edition luxury art book tells the story of Joan Charnley’s 1949 thesis ‘Horizontality and Verticality - The Importance of Stripe in Textile Design’, which was hidden away for 70-years.
With contributions and essays from design historians Lesley Jackson and Dr Laura Gray, it examines Joan’s thesis and explores what life was like for women designers in the 1950s. Julian Bovis writes about Joan’s history and Nigel Durkan discusses the importance of Joan’s archive. The book includes a full colour reproduction of the original 200-page thesis, with a full transcript for ease of reading (Joan’s thesis was hand-written).
The book is limited edition and numbered, wrapped in hand-designed paper.
